I love being a ‘Solution Activist’

May 24th, 2010

My job rocks, everyday I get to see , hear and showcase people and businesses doing remarkable things — what a ride !!

Take today for example. This morning I was told about the ‘Australian Library and Information Association‘ and through them I was introduced to the ‘National Simultaneous Storytime‘ and the ‘CEO Sleepout‘.

Being a father of two young boys, play gyms, zoos, parks and bedtime storytime are all activities that are now part of a normal day. When I learnt that every year ALIA facilitates a campaign whereby libraries around Australia all read the same book to children at a nominated date & time, I was immediately onboard. What a great idea and a great way to promote childrens literacy. This years book is ‘Little White Dogs Can’t Jump’ and I can’t wait to take my boys to hear it being read.

However my mornings journey didn’t stop there — as result of my conversations with ALIA, I was introduced to the ‘CEO Sleepout‘. On Thursday 17th June 2010, CEO’s from all over Australia will sleep rough for a night to raise money for St Vincent de Paul Society whose goal is to offer long-term solutions that truly break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by offering people a hand up, not just a hand out. I would encourage everybody to get behind this great cause.

Remarkable Solution: Everyday Hero

People who know me, know I love Rugby — and it was through my local team that this excellent business came to my attention. Everyday Hero allows anyone to setup their own personal fundraising page and use this page to raise money for their favourite charity, school or event. The fundraising page that grabbed my attention was one that the Queensland Reds Rugby Team setup — whereby for every try they scored whilst on tour in South Africa they (via Oxfam Australia) brought a goat for a local community. (see their fundraising page here)

What a great business offering a fantastic and innovative fund-raising solution. This is definately a business to keep your eye on !!

Remarkable Solution: Mathletics

When I checked Mathletics this morning there were over 6,000 junior, middle and high school students online choosing of their own free will to answer math questions — could this be right ?? Choosing Math ?? Incredible !!

Mathletics is one of those idea’s that I am sure no bank manager would ever approve a loan for.

Can you imagine the pitch — We are building a site where students from anywhere in the world register and can then sign-in as often as they like — to answer as many math questions as they want. Competing to answer as many questions as possible either as individuals and/or as a class to be top-ranked on the site.

Hats off to the people who executed this idea.  Let me know of other similiar services that exist.

My neice told me she and her whole class use the site everyday and love it !!

What will you do on the occasion of your 100th birthday ??

Kathryn Wasserman Davis chose to celebrate by committing $1 million for one hundred Projects for Peace

viewbook-2008-thumbStudents at American Colleges and Universities are encouraged to design grassroots projects for peace that they themselves will implement.

The projects judged to be the most promising and do-able are then given $10,000 each to implement. Check out the projects funded so far.

Let me know your favourites.

Wouldn’t it be great if this could be extended to students from all around the world !!

Gen Y’s driving the change they want to see in the world — go you good things !!

Remarkable Solution: Reprieve

Lawyers making a postive difference — who would have thought it possible ??

Okay I know this is a touch harsh on the poor old legal faternity — but with the amount we OVER spend on lawyers as a society I am excited when I see a community of legal eagles working together to ensure that people on death row and in military and secret prisons (wherever they may be in the world) have fair legal representation and humanitarian assistance. “Reprieve uses the law to enforce the human rights of prisoners, from death row to Guantánamo Bay.”

Check out Reprieve (US), Reprieve (UK), Reprieve (AUS)

Next time you pay a lawyers invoice — ask them “What Reprieve organisation are they helping support ?”

If you need proof of this communities need to exist check out Linda Carty’s story.

What is a Solution ??

April 15th, 2010

Author: Brad Greene

Was having coffee with a friend today and she asked me the question — What is the definition of a Solution ? So I gave her the definition from our site. A Solution is a product or service, or a mix of products and services that addresses a specific problem, challenge or need. A Solution – is what you do, what your proud of, what you offer.

Interestingly the organizations that specialize are having no problems understanding the solution vs business concept and are finding it easy to showcase what they offer on findsolve. It seems to be the more opportunity driven organizations who are finding difficulty showcasing what they offer vs who they are.

The solution currently showcased on findsolve Project Management Office in 60Daysis a great example of the solution vs business concept in action. There is no doubt that the business “PM Solutions Australia” has a large number of services they offer. But the Project Management Office in 60Days is obviously a service-offering (solution) that the business “PM Solutions Australia” offer and are very proud of – plus are confident that they will be able to gather the Customer References to show that that this service-offering (solution) has actually been implemented, is proven and the Customers are satisfied and would recommend the service-offering (solution).

findsolve is a Solution Marketplace — not another business listing/directory. We care what you deliver, what you offer, what your speciality is — not who you are. This is a very subtle, but a very important disticintion. We want to hear about the proven solutions – the stuff you would recommend to your friends — we don’t care if their is a massive corporate organization behind the Solution or if it has been created by two 15yr old kids who collaborated via facebook.

My point is this — If you think you offer a Solution — will by heck  who am I to argue with you — and if the people who are using it think it is pretty good — then PUT IT ON findsolve TODAY  – and let us give it a voice !!

Remarkable Solution – Global Hand

April 15th, 2010

Author: Brad Greene

Global Hand has been described as a “humanitarian eBay” and as a “matching service helping corporate/ community groups partner with NGOs: a non-profit brokerage facilitating public/ private partnership”

However they are described — they are nothing short of remarkable and world changing. This is a online match-maker service where corporate/community groups can offer all types of goods, freight, human resources or funds as donation and NGO’s from around the world can view, respond and receive these goods. There goal is simple: to hook up those in need with those who want to help. And to top it off they  also provide branded Web sites for the United Nations Joint Logistics Center (UNJLC), the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Rotary International.

What a fantastic company — they are going all out to effect a postive change and connect the have’s with the have not’s.

Hats off to Matt Flannery and is wife Jessica Jackley who created www.kiva.orgkiva

This is one of my favorite online businesses of all time. Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique small businesses in the developing world. By choosing a business on Kiva.org, you can “sponsor a business” (think $25) and help the world’s working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the business you’ve sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back.

Check out the What is Kiva video on youtube – then get onboard and make a loan !!

We have contacted kiva as we are keen to feature their solution on findsolve. Watch this space..(p.s. – If you know the kiva team, please forward an intro for me)
