Alonzo Mourning

A former American professional basketball player, who played most of his 15-year NBA career for the Miami Heat.


Nicknamed "Zo", Mourning played at center. His tenacity on defense twice earned him NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award and perennially placed him on the NBA All-Defensive Team. He made a comeback after undergoing a kidney transplant and later won his first NBA Championship with the Heat. He has also played for the Charlotte Hornets and New Jersey Nets. On March 30, 2009, Mourning became the first Miami Heat player to have his number retired.

Overview

INSPIRING THROUGH ADVOCACY, EDUCATION AND ENRICHMENT SERVICES

Alonzo Mourning Charities (AMC) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) public fundraising foundation. AMC's mission is to create platforms for youth to excel.  AMC supports programming with proven results that deliver resources to students and families in need.

 

Since 1997, AMC has raised more than $7 million for various programs that aid in the development of children and their families. In addition to supporting other non-profit organizations, Mourning has focused his attention on the development of education & enrichment programming for at-risk students. With the help of donors, Mourning opened the Overtown Youth Center in 2003 in the historic area of Overtown.

 

Another major program of AMC is the Honey Shine Mentoring Program that works to empower young girls to shine as women. The bi-weekly workshops and summer camp that make up the program helps develop and nurture the mind, body, and soul of young women, by providing experiences that enlighten and create balance in their lives.

 

With your participation, Alonzo Mourning Charities can continue to make great strides towards helping to change lives.
