Bono, the lead singer of band U2, uses his celebrity to fight for social justice worldwide: to end hunger, poverty and disease, especially in Africa. His nonprofit ONE raises awareness via media, policy and calls to action.
Also known as Sir Paul Hewson, Bono was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, and attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School where he met his future wife, Ali Hewson, and the future members of U2. Bono writes almost all U2 lyrics, often using political, social, and religious themes.
Bono is widely known for his activism concerning Africa, for which he co-founded DATA, EDUN, the ONE Campaign and Product Red. He has organised and played in several benefit concerts and has met with influential politicians. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, was granted an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and was named as a Person of the Year by Time, among other awards and nominations.

DATA is advocating for the international community to commit itself to make aid SMART.
The aim is to encourage a more entrepreneurial and flexible aid paradigm, which above all empowers the poorest communities in the poorest countries.
SMART:
Sufficient in scale and delivered in a predictable manner
Measurable so taxpayers and recipients can see results
Accountable to the poor for whom it is intended
Responsible management and coordination at the highest level of donor governments
Transparent in presentation to allow scrutiny by civil society
These principles would help to ensure a strong return on taxpayer investment by placing a clear focus on fighting corruption and promoting good governance.
The Global Fund has evolved over the past 8 years into the most effective global health multi-lateral organization in the world, saving lives in 145 countries.
Through a $6 billion commitment to the Global Fund, the US will be credited with the following results by 2014:
Great things are born out of a desire for change. EDUN was created to spark change in the way we feel about our clothes.
EDUN’s Mission
Edun's mission is to encourage trade with Africa and celebrate the possibilities and the people of the continent.
Kenya
Edun partnered with Made Africa to produce a series of tees that bring to life hand drawings made by children from the Bidii School in Kibera, Kenya. Kibera is home to 1.5 million people-more than one quarter of Nairobi's population-making it one of the largest slums in Africa. The majority of the population lives without clean water or sanitation. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of these tees will go back to fund basic needs, such as lunch, supplies, healthcare, and development projects at the Bidii School
Uganda
The Conservation Cotton Initiative (CCI) was created by EDUN, the WCS and Invisible Children to build sustainable farming communities and provide a fair trade market for their cotton. The CCI Uganda Program is based in the Gulu District, an area recovering from a civil war, which displaced millions. The CCI Initiative assists farmers who are returning to their land by providing funding, tools, and training to grow a sustainable cotton business.
Who We Are
ONE is a campaign and advocacy organisation with more than 2 million members committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Cofounded by Bono and other campaigners, ONE is nonpartisan and works closely with African policy makers and activists.
What We Do
At ONE, we achieve change through advocacy. We hold world leaders to account for the commitments they've made to fight extreme poverty, and we press for better development policies, more effective aid and trade reform. We also support greater democracy, accountability and transparency in how these resources are being deployed.
How We Work
ONE works closely with policy experts, African leaders, and anti-poverty activists to mobilise public opinion in support of tested and proven programs to fight poverty. At ONE, we believe the fight against poverty is not about charity, but about justice and equality.
AIDS kills an estimated 8,500 people every single day
60% of these live in Sub-Saharan Africa
About (RED)
(RED)'s primary objective is to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds for the Global Fund, to help fight AIDS in Africa. Companies whose products take on the (PRODUCT) RED mark contribute a significant percentage of the sales or portion of the profits from that product to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programmes in Africa, with an emphasis on the health of women and children. American Express RED was the first (PRODUCT) RED available and since then other iconic brands have also embraced the (RED) concept.
Gap, Converse, Giorgio Armani, Motorola, Apple, Dell and Microsoft have launched stylish (PRODUCT) RED phones, iPods, PCs and software. Every (PRODUCT) RED generates REDmoney. Since (RED) launched, more than $100 million of REDmoney has been contributed to the Global Fund, which has gone straight into programmes focussing on women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Rwanda and Swaziland. For example, the programmes it has funded have provided life-changing support to over 500,000 children orphaned by AIDS and information and testing to help millions of people stay HIV-free, as well as supporting people living with HIV/AIDS.
REDmoney
REDmoney is the contribution you make towards eliminating AIDS in Africa every time you use your Card.
How it works: each time you use American Express RED, we send 1% of your total spend to the Global Fund, the organisation nominated by (RED), to distribute REDmoney to where it's needed most in Africa.
Since its launch in March 2006, more than $100 million has been generated by (RED) partners and events for the Global Fund which is a fantastic achievement.
