American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist
Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor, and feminist activist. She travels in this and other countries as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice.
Her books include the bestsellers Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem, Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, Moving Beyond Words, and Marilyn: Norma Jean, on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Her writing also appears in many anthologies and textbooks, and she was an editor of Houghton Mifflin's The Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History.
In 1993, her concern with child abuse led her to co-produce and narrate an Emmy Award winning TV documentary for HBO, "Multiple Personalities: The Search for Deadly Memories." With Rosilyn Heller, she also co-produced an original 1993 TV movie for Lifetime, "Better Off Dead," which examined the parallel forces that both oppose abortion and support the death penalty.

Changing How the World Sees Philanthropy
The Women Moving Millions campaign aims to inspire gifts of a million dollars and above in support of women's funds across the globe.
The campaign is a partnership of visionary donors and Women's Funding Network, a global movement of 150 women's and girls' funds that invest in women-led solutions to critical social issues like poverty and global security.
In May 2009, Women Moving Millions announced that more than $181 million has been raised through partnerships between 101 donors and 41 women's funds! This groundbreaking achievement exceeds the original goal of raising $150 million!
This massive infusion of investment will be a force for lasting change in the life chances and opportunities of women and girls around the globe, with major reverberations for entire communities and countries. Together, women's funds will create lasting advances in areas from community leadership and education to poverty eradication and healthcare access. Learn more about the impact of women's funds.
The donors and founding partners are now gearing up to expand the power and reach of Women Moving Millions with new fundraising initiatives aimed at expanding the reach of the campaign. These include welcoming donor circles and men into the growing movement of trailblazers committed to women-led social change.
Mission
The Family Violence Prevention Fund works to prevent violence within the home, and in the community, to help those whose lives are devastated by violence because everyone has the right to live free of violence.
What We Do
For more than three decades, the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) has worked to end violence against women and children around the world. Instrumental in developing the landmark Violence Against Women Act passed by Congress in 1994, the FVPF has continued to break new ground by reaching new audiences including men and youth, promoting leadership within communities to ensure that violence prevention efforts become self-sustaining, and transforming the way health care providers, police, judges, employers and others address violence.
CAMPAIGNS
The Family Violence Prevention Fund partners with communities and organizations around the world to find new ways to prevent violence in our homes and society and to help survivors of domestic violence.
Here are some campaigns that we invite you to join to help make our world safer for women, children, and their families.

Teens
THAT'S NOT COOL
That’s Not Cool is a national public education campaign that uses digital examples of controlling behavior online and by cell phone to encourage teens to draw their own line about what is, or is not, acceptable relationship behavior.
START STRONG
Preventing intimate partner violence begins with ensuring that young people’s first relationships are healthy ones.
Public Communications
RESPECT! CAMPAIGN
"...because healthy relationships make us healthy."
Because Wanting to Stop is NOT Enough
Founded in 1977, Emerge was the first abuser education program in the United States. Since its creation, Emerge has been a national leader in working to end violence in intimate relationships.
Emerge’s mission is to eliminate violence in intimate relationships. In working toward this goal, Emerge seeks to educate individual abusers, prevent young people from learning to accept violence in their relationships, improve institutional responses to domestic violence, and increase public awareness about the causes and solutions to partner violence. With the development of parenting education groups for fathers, Emerge has expanded its mission to include a goal of helping men to become more responsible parents.
Emerge teaches that domestic violence is a learned behavior, not a disease or a sickness. Emerge supports grassroots, institutional and cultural efforts to stop partner violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Emerge recognizes that other oppressive life circumstances such as racism, poverty and homophobia create a climate that contributes to partner violence.

Our Work
The Value of a Network

Our full member toolkit of developmental resources also includes Smart Growth™, our organizational assessment methodology to review capacities, assets, progress and challenges.
Support – Member funds can engage donors in shaping the future of women’s philanthropy through the Network’s donor retreats and other educational opportunities. Executive peer retreats and specialized regional gatherings foster personal and professional growth as well as stronger relationships between peers and donors.
The Corporation for Enterprise Development is a national nonprofit based in Washington, DC dedicated to expanding economic opportunity for low-income families and communities. CFED uses a “think-do-invest” approach grounded in community practice, public policy and private markets. Here’s how it works.
Think.
We explore ideas and practices that help families and communities more fully participate in the mainstream economy.
Do.
We gather funding partners, local practitioners and policymakers to carry out demonstration programs in communities nationwide.
Invest.
We find investors and policy advocates for ideas that might bring about large scale change.
Purpose
CFED is a multi-faceted organization working at the local, state and federal levels to create economic opportunity that alleviates poverty.
Our Vision
A NEW BIRTH OF ECONOMIC FREEDOM
CFED sees the promise of tomorrow in the world today. We see abundant evidence of the desire and ability of middle and low-income people everywhere to become savers, investors, homeowners, skilled workers and entrepreneurs. We believe that such an opportunity economy would not only produce a fairer, more cohesive and inclusive society, but also a more prosperous, resilient and sustainable one.
CFED believes it is possible and profitable – within a generation – to provide every American, including every child at birth, the opportunity and resources to pursue higher education, start a business, buy a home and save for the future by:
This vision is not new. There are echoes of it throughout history – in universal education, the 30 year mortgage and the GI Bill – all investments in the common genius of the American people. Each of these policies opened the door to the economy to large numbers of people, yet left out or penalized others – notably communities of color and women. Today’s globalizing economy calls for innovative approaches that bring hope and opportunity in new forms. It is CFED’s aim – together with an inspiring array of similarly committed and diverse partners – to develop the 21st century version of these epochal policies to create an economy which offers opportunity to all.
