Founder of Reach Foundation, AFL Brownlow Medalist and President of the Melbourne Football Club
Jim Stynes is a well known Irish Australian, a former professional Australian rules footballer who is currently a businessman, philanthropist, writer, youth worker, qualified teacher and chairman of Melbourne Football Club since 2008.
Stynes came to fame through the Irish Experiment – as both a pioneer and its most successful product. With no prior knowledge of the game, at the age of eighteen the gaelic footballer moved to Australia to play Australian rules football. Stynes went on to become one of Australian rules football's most celebrated players and a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame. During his 12-year Australian Football League career from 1987 to 1998 he became the first (and to date only) player recruited from outside Australia to win the prestigious Brownlow Medal. He is also holder of the record for the most consecutive VFL/AFL games (244) and was well known during his playing days as highly courageous, continuing to play despite injuries. His representative honours include Victorian and All-Australian selection as well as playing for Australia against Ireland in International Rules.
The Jim Stynes legacy had continued well beyond his much celebrated football career. Stynes maintained a high media profile through his work with youth and charity work. He was twice named Victorian of the Year (2001 and 2003) and has been honoured by the Queen with the Medal of the Order of Australia in (2007) and Melburnian of the Year (2010), continuing his work despite being diagnosed with cancer.
Charity Work
After finishing his AFL career, Stynes began to concentrate primarily on his youth charity, the[11] Reach Foundation. He has become a prominent youth worker in Victoria, Australia. The aim of Reach is to support young people on their journey to find their own truth, and to follow their dreams. Reach achieves this by creating a "safe space" for groups of young people to develop trust, openness and the freedom to express their concerns, perceptions, fears and aspirations and to recognise that they are not alone.
In 2003, Stynes was named Victorian of the Year and has worked on government advisory boards including the 1997 Victorian Government Suicide Task Force and he currently sits on the Federal Minister For Youth's Youth Advisory Consultative Forum Committee.

The Melbourne Football Club has a proud and rich heritage dating back to 1858. The Club was one of the founding members of what has become the Australian Football League. Over 150 years, the Melbourne Football Club has won 12 premierships, and it been home to many of the game’s greatest champions, from heroes of yesteryear such as Barassi, Ridley and Flower to modern legends Stynes, Lyon and Neitz.
The Club’s Olympic Park campus will be the home of the MFC Football Department, and provides access, on a shared basis with Melbourne Storm and Melbourne Victory, to elite training facilities for our players. General administration will remain at the MCG. The Football Department administration area covers around 800 square metres, and includes a variety of facilities, from reception to physiotherapy, multi-purpose meeting rooms, staff offices, as well as IT amenities and change rooms. Other major features will include a ‘Heritage Walk’, honouring premierships, major contributors and memorable images of the past, to be treated via etching, timber and displays throughout.

Kicking Goals Program
In 2009, just over 1,700 students from 13 schools participated in the “Kicking Goals” pilot program - a meaningful and successful program aimed at grades 3 – 6. The six week program focuses on Healthy Eating, Respect, Fair Play, Harmony, Leadership and Teamwork. The program is facilitated by Monash Advanced Practicum students and or PE teachers within the school.
The AFL Learning Management system and the AFL Schools website supported the program. The “You Can Kicking Goals” - “Mascots” (3 & 4) and “Rookie” (5 & 6) resources provided the students with a work book which reinforced the important values that are integral to the building of stronger and more harmonious communities.
The “Kicking Goals “program is linked to relevant learning outcomes as prescribed in the curriculum frameworks. Along with the student resources, teachers were also provided with a 10 lesson classroom teacher and learning curriculum to assist with the delivery.
In 2010, The participating schools have increased to 20 and to help with facilitation of the program, we will be working with Deakin University and Monash to place Advanced Practicum Students within your school to drive or assist with the facilitation. It is our intention to offer a Level 1 coaching course and PD to these students/teachers to ensure they are equipped with the appropriate skills.
Reach is for all young people, no matter what their circumstances.
For nearly two decades, Reach has made a positive impact in the lives of over half a million young Australians.
Reach is young people inspiring young people.
OUR VISION
That every young person has the support and self-belief they need to fulfil their potential and dare to dream.
WHAT WE DO
Our inspiring team of young Reach Crew (15-25 years of age) run programs that support young people to increase self-belief and discover who they are. We know that self-belief is necessary for young people to achieve their dreams.
Reach programs include a variety of workshops, weekends away and large scale events that promote the mental health and wellbeing of young people, by supporting them to build skills including resilience and emotional awareness. It has been shown that developing these skills in adolescence can reduce serious problems faced later in life including depression, substance abuse, homelessness and suicide.
WHY WE DO IT
Reach was established in 1994 by Jim Stynes OAM (AFL Brownlow Medalist, youth motivator, and Victorian of the Year 2003) and Paul Currie (drama coach and film director). Jim and Paul recognised a huge unmet need in inspiring young people to truly get the most out of life.
At Reach we believe there is greatness in every young person that is often hidden behind fear, anger or hurt. We are passionate about people recognising their unique strengths and getting the most out of life.
Self-belief, leading to a strong sense of purpose and autonomy, is necessary for young people to fulfil their potential and realise their dreams. We support young people to develop self-belief by discovering more about themselves and expressing who they truly are. It is this journey of self-discovery that results in young people recognising they can do anything they set their minds to.
Reach now works with over 58,000 young Australians every year.
