Using the power of sport as a tool for social change

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was founded in 2000 by Daimler and Richemont and is supported by its Global Partners Mercedes-Benz, IWC Schaffhausen and Vodafone. It celebrates the universal power of sport to bring people together as a force for good and uses the passion that sport inspires to effect social change across the globe.

Based in London, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is a registered UK charity (Charity No. 1111364).

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is an apolitical charitable initiative that uses the positive influence of sport to tackle society's most pressing challenges around the globe, supporting projects on every continent.

According to Academy member Boris Becker, the secret and the strength of sport is that “it has its own rules, it knows no skin colour, no religion, no boundaries.”

Projects worldwide striving to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals are supported by the Global Foundation and a growing network of subsidiary National Foundations in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

There is much work to be done and as Academy member Nawal El Moutawakel said, “We cannot change the world overnight but we can start one playing field at a time.”

Who we are

• We are a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. We build with people in need regardless of race or religion. We welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.

Why we build

• Nearly 2 billion people around the world live in slum housing and over 100 million are homeless. Habitat for Humanity is needed to help eliminate poverty by providing simple, decent shelter to those in need.
• Families left homeless by natural disasters, war and civil unrest often face dire housing situations as they struggle to rebuild their lives. Habitat for Humanity’s Disaster Response program provides shelter and housing solutions to help these families recover.

How it’s possible

• Homeowners and volunteers build under trained supervision.

• In the U.S., Habitat for Humanity lends no-profit, no-interest mortgage loans to its beneficiary families.
• On a global scale, Habitat’s traditional model is not always possible. Our international housing financeprograms consist of innovative housing finance practices and/or partnerships with microfinance organizations.

Bicycle for a Day's mission is to empower individuals with tools which they can use in their everyday lives to make a measurable, tangible difference to our community, our environment and our personal health. There are dozens of things each of us can do that have an immediate, positive impact on the environment. Bicycling is one. Here are some facts about bicycling:

• The average person loses 13 pounds their first year of commuting by bicycle.
• 3 hours of cycling per week can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke by 50%.
• In 1964, 50% of kids rode to school and the obesity rate was 12%. In 2004, 3% rode to school and the obesity rate was 45%.
• The United States could save 462 million gallons of gasoline per year by increasing cycling from 1% to 1.5% of all trips.
• Each auto-commuter in the U.S. spends an average of 50 hours a year stuck in traffic.
• In 2003, cars stalled in traffic wasted 5 billion gallons of fuel.

At our first event last September in New York City, more than 14,000 people visited the South Street Seaport and learned more about Bicycle for a Day (BFAD). Families came together, friendships were formed, and participants had a great time learning more about their city, their community, and what they can do to renew their commitment to a greener, cleaner earth.
