An American actor, screenwriter and film director, also known for his political and social activism
He is a two-time Academy Award winner for his roles in Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008), as well as the recipient of a Golden Globe Award for the former and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the latter.
Penn began his acting career in television with a brief appearance in a 1974 episode of Little House on the Prairie, directed by his father Leo Penn. Following his film debut in 1981's Taps and a diverse range of film roles in the 1980s, Penn emerged as a prominent leading actor with the 1995 drama film Dead Man Walking, for which he earned his first Academy Award nomination and the Best Actor Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Penn subsequently received another two Oscar nominations for Sweet and Lowdown (1999) and I Am Sam (2001), before winning his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003 for Mystic River and a second one in 2008 for Milk. He has also won a Best Actor Award of the Cannes Film Festival for She's So Lovely (1997), and two Best Actor Awards at the Venice Film Festival for Hurlyburly (1998) and 21 Grams (2003).
Penn made his feature film directorial debut with 1991's The Indian Runner, followed by the drama film The Crossing Guard (1995) and the mystery film The Pledge (2001). In 2002, Penn directed one of the 11 segments of 11'09"01 September 11, a compilation film made in response to the September 11 attacks. In 2007, Penn directed his fourth feature film Into the Wild, which garnered critical acclaim and two Academy Award nominations.
In addition to his film work, Penn is known for his political and social activism, most notably his criticism of the George W. Bush administration, his contact with the Presidents of Venezuela and Cuba, and his humanitarian work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Penn also attracted media attention for his previous marriages to pop icon Madonna and actress Robin Wright.

ABOUT US
Founded by actor and humanitarian Sean Penn, J/P HRO began its work just hours after the earthquake hit. Through his previous relief efforts — including experience rescuing hurricane victims and helping to rebuild New Orleans after hurricane Katrina — he had amassed a large network of emergency management and government contacts, whom he mobilized to take immediate action in Haiti. From J/P HROʼs very first days on the ground it was recognized as an agile and effective organization that spent its resources effectively. A year later, J/P HROʼs influence and achievements have increased significantly, precisely because the organization has maintained an agility and effective implementation of resources that maximizes impact and results for the Haitian people.
J/P HROʼs goal is to help lift the nation of Haiti out of the rubble and give the Haitian people a better life. Our organization is dedicated to empowering Haitians to return to their previous lives, and to realize a more promising future. We envision a Haiti where a stable and sustainable standard of living can be achieved without dependence on outside organizations. J/P HRO employs nearly 300 staff, more than 90% of which are local Haitians. As the next phase of work in Haiti unfolds, we strive to continue to be leaders—finding new and more efficient ways of bringing relief and empowerment to the people of Haiti.
J/P HRO YEAR IN REVIEW FACT SHEET
Founded after the January 12th earthquake, J/P HRO currently conducts camp management, medical, rubble removal, demolition, and cholera response operations.
J/P HRO manages two Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps: Pétionville Camp and Terrain Boulos, with an approximate 50,000 total internally displaced persons we are responsible for.
J/P HRO has an in-country staff of 15 international long-term staff, rotating medical volunteers, and over 200 Haitian national staff ranging from doctors, nurses, to teachers and translators, to community organizers and reconstruction teams.
Between January 2010 and January2011, J/P HRO provided medical treatment to over 75,000 Haitians through our static and mobile clinics. J/P HRO has been recognized by the Haitian Ministry of Health and International Red Cross for our cholera preparedness and response.
The cholera outbreak reached Port au Prince in October of 2010, and between October 2010 and January 2011 we treated over 140 cases of cholera within our camp, and over 250 cases of cholera from the surrounding neighborhoods at our Cholera Treatment Isolation Unit (CTU). Our medical staff and volunteers deployed throughout Haiti treated thousands of cholera patients and delivered over 100 tons of supplies to cholera treatment facilities.
J/P HRO removed 54,000 metric tons of rubble and debris from the streets, equaling an average of 25-30 trucks per day from the Delmas 32 area in Port au Prince. J/P has been recognized as an innovative leader in rubble removal and manual demolition, serving as a model for other international organizations working to achieve the same goal.
The Pétionville Camp has been recognized as one of the most well managed camps in Port au Prince. While other organizations are shifting away from camp management, J/P HRO remains committed to the residents of the Pétionville Camp and will remain as camp manager until the last resident has been returned to their previous home or relocated to a permanent place of residence.
